From "Lake/Sky: An Homage to Mark Rothko,” a series of photographs of Lake Michigan, shot from his Streeterville balcony between 2011-2014.

Born in Hungary, Sorel has been an avid photographer since the age of 13. Immigrating to the United States in 1959, he became one of the film industry’s most sought after photographers, documenting movie sets and creating stunning poster images for more than 120 films, including “Easy Rider,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “The Blues Brothers,” “Dune,” “L.A. Confidential,” “Frida,” “Twilight,” “Se7en,” and “Life of Pi.” In addition to his work in cinema, Sorel made photographs for himself throughout his career, moving to Chicago in 2008 to focus more deeply on his personal artistic endeavors. The show at Hilton | Asmus Contemporary will feature previously unseen portraits of Orson Welles, Annette Bening, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Selma Hayak, and more, as well as images taken by Sorel in tribute to his great photographic predecessors Bill Brandt, Edward Weston, Man Ray and Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others.
Sorel’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions in Hungary, Poland, and Germany and in group shows in the United States, Havana, Paris, and Prague.
