A native of Elgin, Illinois, Swedish/Irish photographer D.E. Soderstrom has journeyed from studio to freelance photographer over the last 35 years. He is noted for his painterly, emotional depictions of the Midwestern forests, lakes and skies.
A loving grandmother’s generous gift of a Kodak Brownie camera during a visit at age 10 initiated a lifelong challenge and passion to capture beautiful images and share them.
Initially, his free thinking parents encouraged his love of art during the tumultuous times of the sixties. "Throughout my education I loved and studied art, with photography always tugging at me. Capturing natural occurring moments has always intrigued me. I am caught by the interaction of certain light upon shapes and textures that redefines the color and thus transcends the ordinary."
Soderstrom studied art, ceramics, sculpture and photography at Carthage College and has a BFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in photography. A student internship with photographer, Dennis Manarchy, was a pivotal moment in his pursuit of photography.
An avid musician, Soderstrom also plays various guitars. He lives on a small lake in McHenry County with his wife, Johanna, where he cycles, hikes, does yoga and tai chi.
Over the past 35 years, Soderstrom's work has included fashion and product photography for companies such as: RR Donnelley, Crate & Barrel, The Limited, Marshall Field's, Spiegel, Lazarus, Sears, Walmart, Walgreen's, Carson Pirie Scott, and Dillards.
